Since October 2016, the project “Q_munity - Racism Criticism and Empowerment for Queer Youth Work” has been complementing the work of the Queer Youth Department NRW at the interface between LGBTIQ* youth work and the experience of flight, migration and racism. Project Coordination offers expert advice, networking, coordination and financial support for regional projects in NRW. In order for queer young people with experience of flight, migration and/or racism to become visible and to be taken into account in youth work with their needs and experiences, it is necessary to simultaneously raise awareness and empower.
The following focal areas are part of the project:
Counseling, networking, continuing education and empowerment of full-time youth workers and volunteer group leaders in NRW
Counseling and support for refugee LGBTIQ* adolescents and young adults and Bi_POC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) who contact meetings and groups
Raising awareness among young visitors about the topics of racism, migration and flight as well as their involvement and participation in opening up the group and structures to young people with multiple affiliations
Individual events and projects on youth work in the context of LGBTIQ* and flight, migration & racism
In addition to working with and for queer young people with experience of flight, migration and racism, the project is also explicitly focused on working with full-time and volunteer youth workers and previous structures. This goes hand in hand with raising the awareness of employees about the issues of flight, migration and racism. At the same time, working in safe spaces is an important aspect of exchange, strengthening and visibility for queer young people with multiple affiliations. Another focus is promoting the nationwide self-organization and networking of queer young people with refugee experience/BI_POC.
