My child said it was trans*/nonbinary. What am I doing now?
How can we design our offer of help so that it is also safe and empowering for trans* young people?
How can I support young trans* people in their everyday life, when coming out, or during their transition?
For these and many other questions, the project offers Trans*sensitive assistance. Because in a society geared to the needs of cis people and an often trans*hostile environment, trans* and non-binary children and young people in particular need safe and supportive spaces to explore their identity and live strongly and independently.
Many of them find these spaces, among other things, in the Open Youth Work offerings, which are supported by the Queer Youth Department. Whether trans* and non-binary children and adolescents find support in their immediate environment — the family, or in (semi-) inpatient child and youth welfare services — is another essential factor for their psychological well-being.
The following focal areas are part of the project
- Advice, networking, continuing education and empowerment of specialists who work with young trans* people in the context of (partially) inpatient child and youth welfare, or want to do so.
- Support, strengthening and networking of parents and (election) families of young trans* people. Especially in the area of building and expanding self-help structures.
- Target group-specific individual events on the topics of supporting young trans* people.
The project started in September 2021 and is located at the interface of the Trans* NRW State Coordination and the Queer Youth Department of NRW. There is close cooperation with the specialist agencies.
